2006 Showcase Home
In the summer of 2004, Dorothy and Katy Hoehn returned to Clear Lake to visit some old friends as they did every year; friends made while living in the cottage built by Dorothy’s father in 1912, until it was sold in the late 50’s. When they returned for this visit they saw that their old cottage was for sale and immediately purchased it and started making plans to restore the cottage that was, is, and forever will be known as Sommerset. They chose Four Seasons Design & Remodeling because they recognized our design/build capabilities and we started working on the “cottage we remember”. With both owners living in California, the basic plan was agreed upon that summer but additional long distance planning and decision-making were still to come. While challenging at times, with good teamwork we not only met, but also exceeded their goals and we are proud to showcase their project.
The work started with removing some old additions to make the home align architecturally and restore it to the look the Hoehn’s remembered and also adding approximately 1400 square feet. Accessibility was integral in the design in the home with grab bars in all bathrooms, showerseats, a stair lift, and non-slip Florida tile. Before renovation, there were three small bedrooms, each with their own plumbing. Today Sommerset features three large bedrooms and three separate bathrooms. Color choices throughout, from each Kohler inspired bathroom to the color of carpet give Sommerset a California feel. All shower areas have custom glass enclosures and doors provided by Quality Glass and Angola Lumber provided all the necessary wood products from basic framing to sheeting products to special engineered beams.
A spacious kitchen equipped with Kitchen Aid appliances, Merrillat cabinets, and Meganite countertops give the cottage a special hominess. With large pantry areas for storage, a special spot for the television and an incredible island make this kitchen truly unique. All the modern conveniences are also here such as a trash compactor, large double ovens, and an island gas cook top all provided by Sanborn's Furniture and Appliances.
Beautiful wood interiors with wood sills bring out the quality woodwork remembered from the original cottage and all the old windows were replaced with Pella Architectural Series Classic High Efficiency windows. A special feature of the windows from Irmscher Suppliers in Fort Wayne were the roll screens that can be rolled up when the screens are not needed to enjoy the spectacular view of the lake. Come and see how nearly 100 years of heritage was updated and expanded with the influence of California culture and feel. Sommerset established in 1912. Sommerset reestablished in 2005.
